Pushkin Leningrad State University
The University was founded in 1992. In 1999 it was named after the famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin to mark the instituition’s outstanding achievement in the field of education.
The University is a major educational and scientific center in North-West of Russia. There are branches of the University in Moscow, Barnaul, Dudinka, Yekaterinburg, Norilsk, and Yaroslavl, and also in the towns of Leningrad Region such as Boksitogorsk, Vyborg, Gatchina, Kingisepp, Luga, and Podporozhye.
The University comprises 13 schools, 4 research institutes, a university research park, business incubators, innovative-technological centres, 3 research-and-education centres and 30 laboratories.
The University implements training in 13 aggregative groups of qualifications.
Scientific research is conducted in 8 fields of study.
Nowadays there are more than 10,000 students, postgraduates and doctoral candidates at the University. Pushkin LSU has the licence of Federal service for supervision in education and science on 42 qualifications of higher education, 61 bachelor degree programs, 56 master degree programs, 33 postgraduate programs and 62 programs of vocational secondary education.
The University has Doctoral Thesis Defence Councils and Candidate Thesis Defence Councils in different fields of science.
Since the University was founded, more than 10,000 full-time students, 45 000 part-time students has been trained, thus completely meets the demand for highly qualified personnal in Leningrad Region.
The University employs over 500 teachers in 30 departments. 78% of our teachers have advanced academic degrees, 17% of them are Doctors of Sciences.

Since the University’s foundation the Rector has been Vyacheslav N. Skvortsov (Full Professor, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Honoured Teacher of the Russian Federation, an author of more than 200 publications in Educational Sciences, Philosophy, and Economics).
Vyacheslav N. Skvortsov is the current scientific supervisor of the following research sectors:
- generalization and dissemination of the international experience in the field of long life learning for sustainable development;
- ecological balance: anthropogenic environmental changes and rational nature-use;
- socio-economic systems and processes management;
- modern education management in the continuous professional education;
- development of theoretical and organizational basis of the national continuous professional development system as one of the factors for sustainable development of the state and society;
- non-governmental higher education institutions under higher education reorganization;
- universities as regional centres for continuous education;
- personality development under deprivation;
- the regional model of socialization of children’s home leavers in Leningrad Oblast;
- the strategy and tactics of the regional professional education in the conditions of the innovative development of the Russian Federation;
- development of the regional system of early psychological and pedagogical assistance for children with disabilities;
- socialization of children with disabilities in the social and educational system of Leningrad Oblast;
- inclusive education for people with disabilities in a higher educational institutions;

Academic periodicals «Vestnik of Pushkin Leningrad State University journal» (six series) and «Leningrad Law Journal» are on the list of the leading reviewed journals and editions accredited by the State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
As part of the cooperation with the EurAsEC (The Eurasian Economic Community), the University holds a unique annual international forum on continuing education.
Pushkin Leningrad State University is the Scientific Coordination Center in International Studies of Pre-Cyrillic Slavic Written Language and Pre-Christian Slavic Culture. Results of the research work are discussed on Annual International Congress «Pre-Cyrillic Slavic Written Language and Pre-Christian Slavic Culture».
The Northwestern Regional Centre of Culture and Religious Studies holds a regular scientific seminar «Space of Culture: Signs, Symbols and Concepts».
The Research Institute of Geography, Ecology and Nature Management develops criteria and standards of ecological sustainability of geospatial systems of various types for rationalizing of the nature management. It also executes ecological maintenance, control and audit in the field of environmental safety, the rational nature-use, sustainable regional development, analyzes the geo-ecological situation. It carries out monitoring of protected areas and monuments of natural and cultural heritage as well.
The Research Laboratory of Socialization Problems is focused on the problems of student’s socialization at various stages of adaptation to the educational environment at the higher educational institution. The results obtained show the importance of the problem for students’ academic activities as well as explain the mechanism of adaptation to the educational environment in the higher education institution.
The actual problem of providing distance learning to the personnel of Leningrad Oblast is successfully being solved by the Informatics Institute and by the laboratories of distance learning, multimedia technologies, automatic control systems, modern educational technologies and computer testing.
The technical base of the University -- computer labs, biotechnological and other laboratories, libraries -- is constantly updated.
The University annually organizes more than 70 scientific conferences of regional, all-Russian and international level, among which the peculiar place is taken by the international scientific conference «Tsarskoe Selo Readings», held since 1996.
In a number of cultural events it is necessary to distinguish annual festival «Provincial Meetings» (held since 1993), where the student academic choir takes part. The academic choir is an active participant of various music competitions and festivals in Russia and abroad.
Competitions «Student of the Year», «Miss LSU», «KVN» (Club of the Funny and Inventive) are especially popular among students. The University takes part in the traditional Tsarskoye Selo carnival.
During the last six years 270 First and Second Degree Awards, golden medals and awards were received for participation in 96 prestigious national and international scientific forums, competitions and congresses.
14 students were awarded with First Degree Awards of all-Russian scientific competition «National Endowment of Russia» under the President and the State Duma.
Students and teaching staff of the University received 16 State awards and scholarships, 11 diplomas for scientific research from the Exhibition of Economic Achievements and 3 Grand Prix of International Science Fair.
In recent years 490 students and 101 teachers took part in various international and all-Russian scientific competitions.
The University established the business incubator, the research park, innovative and technological centre «Institute of Mathematics and Informatics» and research-and-education centres.
The University has recently concluded 59 fundamental and practical economic contracts and state contracts funded by different institutions.
In 2012, by the results of scientific and research activity, the University was included in «Leading scientific organizations of Russia» national register.
Each School is unique but at the same time they all are integral parts of a harmonious system with centralized administration, principles and traditions.
The School of Natural Sciences, Geography and Tourism joined scientists and experts in 11 fields of knowledge. The School has the Internet Center, the Geological Museum, several laboratories (including Laboratory of Soil Studies, Laboratory of Environment, Laboratory of Chemical Technology. Eminent and young scientists of the School co-operate with the Botanical Institute and the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Committee for Natural Resources in Leningrad Oblast, the Russian Geographical Society, the Limnology Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the International Academy for Tourism. Students of the School have training practice in various regions of Russia and abroad – in the Urals, Karelia, the Volga region, Norway, Finland and Italy. Every year members of the School’s tourist club go to the Altai, the White Sea, the Caucasus, the Kola Peninsula or the Crimea. Students of the School are the winners of the all-Russian Olympiad on geography, international student competition «Business and Management», interuniversity competition «New Faces in Tourism».
The School of Foreign Languages has its own specialized library with numerous audio and video materials. The School also hosts a Goethe Institute educational centre. The professors and the best students of the School travel abroad to perform their language training in the countries of the language studied. The students of English department do their internships in the USA as instructors in youth camps. The Department of Translation Studies is an associate member of Union of Translators of Russia. The Department aims to train translators with professional knowledge of two foreign languages (English and German/French).
The School of History and Social Sciences combines lectures and practical research in the «Gardarika» History Youth Camp which attracts talented schoolchildren from different districts of Leningrad Oblast. The archaeological expedition, established more than 16 years ago, works on the territory of Staraya Ladoga, the ancient capital of our state, in cooperation with the Institute of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The School of Mathematics and Computer Science is a structural unit of the Institute of Informatics of the University, provides a high-level training of students in the applied aspects of Computer Science. There is the Internet Centre, and a number of academic and research laboratories for students and teaching staff. The School implements the Regional Investment Program for development and application of E-learning Technologies in Leningrad Oblast. The best students of the School are involved in implementing the Program. In 2011 the School held a Student Research Conference «Personal Robotics».
The School of Special Education and Social Work trains specialists in the field of work with people with disabilities in health as well as in the field of social work. Together with the Russian Academy of Education and the Institute of Correctional Educational Science, the Federal Institute of Educational Development, teaching staff of the School develops and applies innovative technologies in lifelong distance learning and inclusive education of children with disabilities and children with special needs. The School’s research laboratory carries out the research of problems of diagnostics and correction of mental and sensomotor activities disorders. Students of the School have their training practice in leading educational and medical institutions of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast.
Teachers and students of the School of Psychology conduct academic and applied research on mental health of the population in Leningrad region, and develop the system of psychological support for the region’s residents. The School holds traditional scientific conference «Psychology of the XXI century». Each year the School conducts regional psychological and pedagogical Olympiad, the participants of which are more than 400 senior pupils of Leningrad Oblast schools.
Teachers of the School of Physical Education and Sports train students who achieve high levels in team and single sports including badminton, boxing, track and field athletics, mountain and marathon running, multiathlon, futsal, cheerleading, swimming, indoor football, judo and volleyball. The School’s boxing team is twice champion among St. Petersburg university boxing teams and the winner of all-Russian Summer Universiade in 2010. Pushkin LSU men's basketball team is a four-time world champion among student teams. There is the Centre for training field judges and inspectors for sport games at the School.
The School of Russian Philology conducts extensive teaching and research work in the field of theory and history of language and literature, journalism, advertising and public relations (PR). The School holds two major research events such as International Research Conference «Pushkin readings» on the 6th of June, the birthday of Alexander Pushkin, and International Congress «Pre-Cyrillic Slavic Written Language and Pre-Christian Slavic Culture». Students of the School have a chance of training at the University of Bergamo in Italy, on the 5th channel of Russian television, in various educational institutions of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast. Students go in for expeditions to collect folklore and dialects of Leningrad region. The collection of students’ scientific works is published annually. Even the first-year students develop their self-contained projects, presenting them in local and national competitions and taking part in International Baltic Student Forum, International student conference «The Baltic PR Weekend», International educational forum «Ladoga», all-Russian competition of the talented youth «National Endowment of Russia», and other contests.
The key disciplines at the School of Philosophy, Cultural Studies and Fine Arts are subjects in the fields of Philosophy, Culture, Political Science, Religion and Artis. Students develop their creative abilities in the School’s studios, supervised by the leading experts in Design, Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Arts and Crafts, Music and History of Art. Classes take place both at the University’s premises and in the museums of St. Petersburg and its suburbs. The School holds annual Week of Science when students present the results of their creative and scientific projects, various exhibitions and contests are arranged. The School together with North-Western Research Centre of Culture and Religion Studies holds annually conference of young scientists, during which students demonstrate the results of their research and creative activity.
The School of Economics and Investment trains specialists for state financial institutions and other business structures. Teaching staff and students of the School organize research conferences. Every year the students take part in Research Conference «Ways of socio-economic development: city, region, state, world», where they present their business projects. Under the agreement between the government of Leningrad Oblast and Foundation CIFF (University of Alcala, Spain), graduates take their MBA courses in Spain.
The School of Law train specialists in State Law, Civil Law, Criminal Law and International Law. The School’s graduates work in executive, legislative and judicial power structures, at enterprises and in organizations. In 2010 the School together with representatives of law enforcement and judicial authorities of the USA (Maryland) held the seminar where students of the School took part as well. It is annually held as a part of the program of the Russian American Rule of Law Consortium (RAROLC), where the issues of legal and judicial reform in the Russian Federation and legal proceedings in the United States were discussed. The School regularly holds meetings with representatives of Public Prosecutor's Office of Leningrad Oblast and its courts. Students have their training practice at courts and Public Prosecutor's Office of Leningrad Oblast as well as at trading companies of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast.
The School of Fundamentals of Modern Technologies provides courses in Applied Mathematics and Physics; Chemistry, Chemical Technology and Biotechnology. Taking into consideration that innovative priority of Russia is economic development, engineering specialties connected with the latest achievements in mathematics, physics, chemistry and nanotechnology, become the most popular. The research and commercial work in this area is prestigious, interesting and well-paid. Graduates of the School work at one of the largest chemical enterprises of the North-West Federal District -- «Boxitogorsky Alumina». Specialists in nanotechnology are in great demand in Russian scientific institutions of St. Petersburg, Moscow and abroad. There are a number of well-equipped labs, where the research in Chemical Technology and Biotechnology, Applied Mathematics and Physics can be carried out. There is the Research and Education High-Tech Materials Centre for conducting fundamental and applied research and experimental design, with the primary area of research being the development of new nanomaterials and studying their chemical, physical and fundamental properties.
Pushkin Leningrad State University provides training in accordance with the state licence of the Federal Service for Supervision in Education and Science and the certificate of state accreditation.
